Cheque it out

The news that the Payments Council has voted to end cheque clearing in 2018 led to considerable media comment and speculation about future payment technologies. Dave Birch of Consult Hyperion was invited on to a couple of BBC television shows to discuss the issues. On the BBC's Breakfast show, Dave pointed out that most people already prefer to pay with debit cards and that few people absolutely rely on cheaues.

On the BBC's Working Lunch programme, Dave explained that the technology most likely to replace cheaues for the general public is already with us: the mobile phone.

Trailblazer

Dave Birch of Consult Hyperion was awarded the Trailblazer Award for 2009 at ID World in Milan.

The ID People Awards are given each year to "outstanding members of the international ID community" who have distinguished themselves in terms of commitment, leadership, creativity and innovation. The awards, sponsored by the publication ID People, are awarded in the following categories: ID Community Award, ID Leadership Award, ID Limelight Award, ID Trail Blazer Award and ID Outstanding Achievement Award. The Trailblazer Award is presented each year in "recognition of the individual who has made great strides in helping the market envisage what will happen over the coming years".

Digital money database now live

Professor Leo van Hove's electronic money database has long been an important destination for organisations interested in the future of money, so when the European Commission's support (via the Electronic Payment Systems Observatory) finished, Consult Hyperion were delighted to be able to provide a new home for this valuable resource. Consult Hyperion join Global Platform

Consult Hyperion has become the latest company to join Global Platform, the international specification body for smart card infrastructure. Joining at Observer Level, we will stay informed of technology developments within the organization and discuss strategic and technical activities by participating in the Advisory Council; a forum designed to create an open dialogue between GlobalPlatform members and the Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, and Technical and Executive Directors.  We will also have the opportunity to engage in GlobalPlatform’s Mobile Task Force, which was established to drive existing GlobalPlatform technology, and to create new extensions of the technology, to satisfy the developing needs of mobile contactless services. Advance notice: 13th annual Digital Money Forum, 10th-11th March 2010

A "heads up" so that you can put this date in your diaries. The 13th annual Consult Hyperion Digital Money Forum will be held in London on 10th-11th March 2010. The Forum will be sponsored by the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) and Visa Europe.

• CGAP is an independent policy and research center dedicated to advancing financial access for the world's poor. It is supported by over 30 development agencies and private foundations who share a common mission to alleviate poverty. Housed at the World Bank, CGAP helps governments, microfinance providers, donors, and investors.

• Visa Europe is the leading European payment system, owned and governed by its 4,600 European member banks.

Our thanks to both of these organisations to getting behind the 2010 Forum. We're working on the agenda at the moment and it will be posted to the Forum web site later this year.
