Virtually legal

[Dave Birch] Our good friends over at e-commerce law & policy, a sister publication to the reasonably-priced yet indispensable e-finance & payments law & policy, are organising a special briefing on virtual worlds at Field Fisher Waterhouse in London on 18th April. E-Commerce Law & Policy is organising a special briefing with Field Fisher Waterhouse on virtual worlds, which will take place in London in April 2007. Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) have evolved into virtual worlds with rapidly growing populations. World of Warcraft now has a population of 7.5million and, since its launch in 2003, Second Life has reached a population of over 2million residents, with more than 10,000 people joining everyday. However, it is not just individuals who are migrating online, businesses too are keen to seize the opportunities available in virtual worlds. As virtual worlds become more sophisticated and more businesses make the leap into these worlds, various legal issues need addressing. Who governs and regulates virtual worlds? How do the laws of the real world apply to virtual worlds? What are the legal issues that need to be addressed? Lawyers, businesses and anyone with an interest in what happens in virtual worlds can benefit from analysis of these issues. The Briefing will focus on:

  • Virtual Worlds: An Overview
  • In-World Commerce and Property Rights
  • Financial and Tax Issues
  • Data Protection

There will also be an opportunity to question and discuss with our expert panel on all the issues raised.
