Fourth roundtable in the series on Identity and Financial Services

The fourth roundtable in the Visa Europe CSFI Fellowship series on "Identity and Financial Services" will be held at the Innholder's Hall, 30 College Street, London EC4R 2RH, from 12.30pm-2.15pm on 29th March 2011. Download invite_RT4.pdf (123.7K).

If there is a business case for building identity infrastructure in the financial sector then it rests on two pillars: convenience and crime. In other words, can we make life simpler, easier and more convenient for customers and can we make life more difficult for criminals. In this roundtable, we will focus on the later and try to understand the dynamics around identity and authentication with respect to the criminal fraternity. This is the “know your enemy” input to the programme.

This isn’t for academic interest. If we are going to have a serious impact on crime, then we need to invest. We can see that it can be done: look at what the investment in “chip and PIN” has done to payment card crime on the high street (ie, moved it online). Therefore, we need to invest in more holistic solutions, attacking the root problems and not play pass-the-parcel with criminals. This roundtable will hopefully give us some pointers!

Our expert panel this time have between them many years’ working on the front line in the war against identity-based crime and will share not only their experiences but their ideas for making a real difference

• Richard Martin is a business security consultant at the UK Payments Administration, where he has many years' experience in understanding and tackling card and payments crime.
• John Plank is from the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and has first-hand experience of fighting identity-based crime.
• Colin Holder from Identity Intelligence, a former fraud squad officer, has a database (assembled from interesting sources) of millions of compromised identities.
